Let’s face it. This world is needing us humans to show up better than we have been over the past few centuries. And deep down, we know we CAN do better for ourselves and our communities. Definitely for Mother Earth.

Despite our world and its constant 24/7 noise and ceaseless activity, the attention-seeking and distractions on social media platforms and Mass Media messaging, the extremely unhealthy amounts of consumerism and waste produced by our habitual spending and hunger for more, the rise of chronic illnesses both mental and physical, and the obvious lack of positive leadership in our governments… We collectively are quite resilient and we can and must review and revise our plans. Some of us are already taking strides to do this, and maybe some of you are wondering how you, merely one person, can make any difference with how much “stuff” is going on right now in the world.

Certainly it is quite a task, to try to get all of us humans on the planet to change our habits and beliefs and somehow right ourselves back onto the train tracks. But maybe this “derailment” was exactly what we needed. Maybe this chaos is just the medicine that is needed to help us to realize the potential we all have in ourselves to “do better.” And this is where the healing begins–our realization of our own potential is the gateway to all healing.

I’ve noticed that some of the most potent and beneficial medicines are bitter. Sometimes, we need a little bit of tough love, or bitter medicine, in order to make the changes necessary to level up. What if there is a silver lining to all of this? What if what we are all collectively experiencing…is a blessing?

Awakening is no easy task. And I feel like this period of time is an awakening for us humans. This period of awakening, or increased awareness, is showing us blatantly what is no longer serving us…how some of the old ways of doing things need to die off (literally and figuratively) in order for new and improved ways to be received and implemented. Death is just as integral a part of life as life itself.

Think about it for a minute. If you want to plant seeds in your garden, you need to have fertile soil. Soil is created by destruction of a whole bunch of plant and animal life, broken down into its smallest forms. And from that broken down debris of what might have been a mighty redwood tree or a fallen moose, comes forth more plants which feed the mouths of millions of living beings.

When we are backed up against a wall, isn’t that the time when we can choose what our fates might be? There is choice in how we react. Even in the death of a life we once knew. We can do better, and the choice is yours.

Quick side note: When I say “Do better” I don’t actually mean it as an outward action of “doing” or to condemn us for previous bad behavior. That does not help us in any way. “Doing better” in the context of this writing means to recognize and acknowledge our previous missteps and to learn from them. It’s again not about making what is going on “bad” or to shame us, but it’s more about accepting what is happening right now and to take action (and this can even be an internal action such as a choice to remain equanimous despite the chaos, or a choice to practice compassion for our fellow humans and planet Earth).
